Yay! It is time again for Susanna Leonard Hill´s Valentiny Contest.

A Valentine’s Surprise (214 words)

Corine Timmer

“Mommy’s home,” Alpha chuckled.

Fifi looked at Boris.

Boris looked at Fifi, then at Alpha.

For a rainy day she sure is cheerful, Boris thought.

Alpha opened her shopping bag.

She placed each item on the kitchen counter.

Boris and Fifi perked up their ears.

“Do you know what day it is today?” Alpha cooed.

Boris and Fifi wagged their tails.

“It’s Valentine’s Day,” Alpha cheered,

Patting both of them on the head.

“Mommy’s got a surprise for you!”

Alpha washed her hands and put on her apron.

Boris and Fifi followed her every move as she

Washed the peas and drained them.

Peeled the potatoes and cut them into cubes.

Washed the carrots and grated them, roughly.

Then, she dropped them all together

Into a pot of boiling water.

Boring!

Next, she chopped an onion.

Fifi looked at Boris, then at Alpha.

Alpha placed her special stewpot on the stove.

Woohoo!

Then, she opened a little bag.

It crunched between her fingers.

Fifi’s eyes popped out of their sockets.

Oh, that scent! Could it be...?

Woof woof! Boris barked.

Alpha fried the onions,

Mixed in the CHICKEN HEARTS,

Added the vegetables and stock.

Finally, she shouted, “Group hug!”

Boris and Fifi jumped up at her legs.

“Now, who’s hungry?” Alpha howled.

WOOF! AROO!

“Everyone deserves a chance to fly”

Witch’s Brew

Corine Timmer (100 words)

Witch’s Brew

“What’s wrong?” Rat shrieked.

“I’m dying!” Witch groaned. “I added snakeroot instead of snail saliva.”

“Where’s your Potions Bible?” Rat sputtered.

Witch pointed at the bookcase.

Rat raced through the pages.

“Spider paste!” he shouted. “You need spider paste!”

Spider shrunk with fear. Her legs trembled.

They shook so hard her cobweb bounced up and down.

Without warning, she was catapulted into the air.

“Rat! Mortar and pestle!” Witch cheered, as she caught Spider.

While lowering the arachnid into the mortar a grin grew on Witch’s face.

“Trick!” Witch chuckled.

“Happy Halloween!” Rat roared.

“And now a treat,” Spider sneered.

It´s tIme again for Susanna Leonard Hill´s Halloweensie Contest. YAY!

Snap Apple Fright (99 words)

By Corine Timmer (second entry)

On the night of All Hallows’ Eve,

Granny Smith a plan did weave.

Ever since the village kids’ foolery,

Her thoughts had grown ultra-delusory.

Dressed in rags and a witch’s shawl,

She sneaked into the village hall.

In the cauldrons her apples were nodding.

Their plan would surely get somebody sobbing.

She injected each apple with cochineal cream,

A potion so red it could make you scream.

When the villagers flocked to the feast,

Granny Smith escaped on her beast.

In a shiver of wind she could hear the howls,

And all the little devils threw in their towels.

It´s that time of year again. Susanna Leonard Hill´s Halloweensie Contest. YAY! :)

The Contest: Write a 100 word Halloween story appropriate for children (children here defined as 12 and under) (title not included in the 100 words), using the words shiver, cauldron, and howl.

Here is my entry,

Pet Cemetery Picnic (100 words)

“I don’t like trick-or-treating,” Lily said. “Why don’t we have a pet cemetery picnic?”

Alfie shivered at the thought.

“Don’t you wonder what ghost mutts do on Halloween?” Lily continued.

“I guess,” Alfie mumbled.

So, they filled a picnic basket with treats and set off . . .

“Look! There’s a ghost in the cemetery!” Alfie howled.

“Don’t be such a wuss,” Lily said. “It’s a man.”

“I am the critter-sitter,” the man explained, while stirring in a cauldron. “Who wants some pet stew?”

Alfie’s knees wobbled.

Then, out of nowhere, dogs and cats appeared and joined in the feast.
